Bible Ceremony Readings

Now this idea isn’t necessarily the most unique – in fact, it’s the most common thing you’ll hear at a wedding ceremony besides “I do!” However, it’s a classic ceremony incorporation for a reason: it’s powerful.

There are tons of verses to choose from, many being romantic, others being inspirational for what a marriage should be and the ideals it should uphold. Here are some of our favorite Bible verses for wedding ceremony readings:

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 is a classic at wedding ceremonies for a reason: it’s beautiful, meaningful and portrays the real meaning of love. But scripture has many examples of love, words of wisdom, and lovely snippets to include in every wedding ceremony, especially for couples that hold their faith close to their hearts. We’ve outlined some of our other scripture and prayer favorites below.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.”

1 John 4:10

How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! Love one another. This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. This is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love, does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. In this way, love is made complete among us. We love because he first loved us.

1 John 4:19

“We love because He first loved us.”

Ecclesiastes: 4:9-12

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up. Again, if two lie together, they are warm; but how can one be warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him.”

Genesis 2:24-28

The Lord God said: “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him.” So the Lord God formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air, and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them; whatever the man called each of them would be its name. The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of the air, and all the wild animals; but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man.
So the Lord God cast a deep sleep on the man, and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. The Lord God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man. When he brought her to the man, the man said:
“This one, at last, is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
This one shall be called ‘woman,’
For out of ‘her man’ this one has been taken.”
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one body.

Mark 10:6-9

From the beginning of creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; and they shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Romans 12:9-16

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another.

Colossians 3:12-17

As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ* dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Decorate With Scripture

Similarly to incorporating Bible verses into your ceremony readings, you can use scripture to decorate your special space! We love these sign ideas for ceremony and reception spaces:

Mr. & Mrs. Vow Books

Vows are easily one of the most important parts of any wedding ceremony, and some Christian couples opt to write them out in vow books to use on the day of the ceremony, and to look back at later! These books help you remember any specific scripture you want to quote, promises you want to make your partner, and of course, help you to not miss a word when it comes to reciting your vows!

Unity Cords

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 states “A chord of three strands is not easily broken,” signifying the importance of a Christ-centered marriage. This is a very popular ceremony tradition, involving the bride and groom twisting the chords around each other, but it also makes for a gorgeous decoration you can showcase at your reception or in your home!

Washing of the Feet

This idea may not be for everyone, but it is Bible-based! Washing of the feet symbolizes love and humility and can be incorporated at any point during or after the ceremony.

Worship Music

Instead of popular wedding songs during the ceremony, processional or recessional, you can include worship music that expresses your Christian faith! Many of these songs make for the perfect background music, are great for walking down the aisle to, or even super fitting for a first dance! We love:

“The Prayer” by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli

Stand out lyrics:

“I pray You’ll be our eyes

And watch us where we go

And help us to be wise

In times when we don’t know

Let this be our prayer

When we lose our way

Lead us to a place

Guide us with Your grace

To a place where we’ll be safe”

“Ave Maria” by Christina England Hale

Stand out lyrics:

“Ave Maria / Hail Mary

Gratia plena / Full of grace

Maria, gratia plena /Mary, full of grace

Maria, gratia plena / Mary, full of grace

“How Great Thou Art” by Pentatonix (featuring Jennifer Hudson)

Stand out lyrics:

“O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder

Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made

I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder

Thy power throughout the universe displayed

Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee

How great Thou art, How great Thou art

Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee

How great Thou art, How great Thou art”

“Nobody Loves Me Like You” by Chris Tomlin

Stand out lyrics:

“Story, I could’ve had a really different story

But You came down from heaven to restore me

Forever saved my life

Nobody loves me like You love me, Jesus

I stand in awe of Your amazing ways

I worship You as long as I am breathing

God, You are faithful and true

Nobody loves me like You”

“When I Say I Do” by Matthew West

Stand out lyrics:

“And I have never been so sure of anything before

Like I am in this moment here with you

And now ‘for better or for worse’

Are so much more than only words

And I pray every day will be the proof

That I mean what I say when I say ‘I do’

Yeah I mean what I say when I say ‘I do’”

Cross at the Ceremony

Lastly, and maybe the most simply, including a cross at the ceremony is a great way to showcase your faith and the importance it has for you. Include a cross up at the alter, as a backdrop or even at each row of chairs!
