What is a Mimosa?
A mimosa is a super simple but delicious alcoholic beverage that has just two ingredients: champagne and orange juice. It doesn’t get easier than that! It’s a super common beverage for brunch, breakfast, or mid-day parties and luncheons.
For the history-buffs out there, the mimosa is believed to be invented at the Ritz Bar in Paris in the 1920s by Frank Meier, a barman and author of the book The Artistry of Mixing Drinks. Originally, the cocktail was called the “Champagne Orange,” which is of course, very clear and descriptive but not as fun as “Mimosa!”
How to Make a Mimosa the Right Way
Even though it’s a simple cocktail, there’s still arguably a “right” way to make it (at least according to its founder in his book, previously mentioned above). Traditionally, it’s made in a one-to-one ratio of sparkling wine to fresh orange juice. With only two ingredients, it’s essential to have fresh orange juice for the very best taste – but at the end of the day, it’s really up to you!
Begin by pouring champagne into a champagne flute and then topping with orange juice in an equal amount – if you’re going to go by the book.
With that being said, mimosas are easy to adapt based on your taste. Some people prefer more orange juice for a sweeter taste, and some prefer more champagne with a splash of orange juice for a little sweetness and color. You can also use Prosecco instead of champagne to make this drink.
7 Mimosa Drink Variations
If you’re looking to add a little pizazz to your mimosa offering, try one of these seven variations! They add different flavors and ingredients, and are easy to customize to make it all your own. Here are a few to try:
Grand Mimosa
Add orange-flavored Grand Marnier to the classic mimosa for an added richness! Combine 1/2 ounce Grand Marnier with 2 ounces of fresh orange juice in a shaker, then shake until well chilled (just 10-15 seconds). Strain into a champagne flute or wine glass and top with 3 ounces of sparkling wine, preferably a dry variety.
Bellini
This Italian take on a mimosa is delicious and super popular! Combine 1 ounce of fresh white peach puree with 3 ounces of brut-style Prosecco and voila! You have a Bellini.
Rossini
Similar to the Bellini, the Rossini has a fruit-forward taste, only with strawberry instead of peach. Combine 1 ounce of fresh strawberry puree with 3 ounces of brut-style Prosecco in a champagne flute.
French 75
An excellent and refreshing choice for any time of the day (don’t limit yourself to brunch!), we have the French 75. To make it, combine 1 ounce of gin, 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice, and 1/2 ounce simple syrup in an ice-filled shaker. Shake well for 10-15 seconds, until chilled. Then strain the mixture into a champagne flute and top with brut-style Champagne. Garnish with a lemon twist if you want to be really fancy!
Pomegranate Mimosa
Substitute pomegranate juice for orange juice for a fruity twist on the classic mimosa.
Pineapple Mimosa
Make your mimosa feel tropical (perfect for beach or destination weddings)! Mix pineapple juice with champagne for a fun twist on the typical mimosa.
Elderflower Mimosa
This unique variation is as pretty as it is delicious. Add elderflower liqueur to champagne for a floral and aromatic mimosa! We love this recipe from Fed and Fit – simply add 3 tablespoons of grapefruit juice to six champagne flutes. Top it with 1/2 ounce of St. Germain (an elderflower liqueur), then top with Prosecco.
