One of the South’s deep (and delicious!) wedding traditions is the Groom’s Cake. You may remember our post on Southern wedding cake pulls from a few weeks back, and this is yet another cake that Southerners may opt to have at their wedding. This puts us at 3 cakes total – yay for more cake!
The Southern tradition of a Groom’s Cake is traced back to the Victorian era in England, and was served exclusively to the groomsmen. The bride then had a Bridesmaid’s cake, served to only the bridesmaids. And of course, there was a main cake for the wedding guests.
Unlike the usual white & light colored wedding cake you’ll find at most weddings, the Groom’s Cake is typically darker colors and features chocolate, fruit, and liqueur. Back in the Victorian era, this cake was a fruit cake. However, as you can imagine, that’s a less popular option these days. The current chocolate and fruit liqueur pays hommage to its original fruit cake roots, but in a much more modern fashion.

Timing

That way everyone gets a sweet treat to end the dinner, and you don’t have to worry about the cake ruining your wedding aesthetic or taking away from your main cake!
One More Tradition…
