While March, April and May are all great months to have a wedding, the most ideal for most climates will be in April to early May. This will be the time where weather is mild, not too hot and not too cold so that guests will be comfortable during your outdoor backyard wedding.

Look at weather predictions and historical data before deciding as ideal temperatures and weather vary by location.

How Can I Have an Inexpensive Backyard Wedding?

Having a backyard wedding on a budget is absolutely possible! There are lots of ways to make your spring backyard wedding both special and inexpensive. Here are our top tips:

  1. Determine Your Budget First. It’s important to always start with the maximum amount you can spend and work backwards so you don’t risk going over budget or getting your heart set on more expensive options. The good thing is, you already have your venue space figured out so you can check that off the list!
  2. Determine Number of Guests. Some limiting of the guest list may be required based on budget. Invite the most important people in your life if you’re on a tight budget, you don’t have to invite every co-worker or friend you’ve ever had! An additional idea is not allowing children or plus one’s for guests that aren’t in serious relationships.
  3. Choose Your Top 3 Priorities. Do you want amazing food that your guests talk about for years? Is there a DJ you’ve been wanting to use, or a band you’ve had your eye on? Maybe you want fresh flowers instead of faux floral arrangements. Make a list of your top 3 priorities and try to make room in the budget for those items. Some compromising and adjusting may be needed but this is a great place to start.
  4. Look for Alternative Food and Beverage Options. Food and booze can be expensive. Make sure to shop around when comparing catering and bar tending services. Many bar tending companies may also give you the option of supplying the booze yourself and they just do the serving, this tends to be a more inexpensive option and gives you more control over what brands you buy and how much you want to spend.
  5. DIY Wedding Favors, Flower Arrangements, and Centerpieces. Making your own wedding favors, bouquets, and centerpieces or other decor is a great way to save money on your backyard wedding. Enlist the help of your bridesmaids and get to work!
  6. Shop Second-Hand or Vintage for Attire and Decor. There are many brick and mortar, as well as online stores that resell wedding decor and attire. You may want to check out what options are available as this may even be cheaper than DIY options. You may also be able to rent attire or decor rather than purchasing it.
  7. Ask for Help in Lieu of Gifts. If you’re not able to hire out catering, bar tending, serving, parking cars, or officiating, you may consider ask for help as a gift instead of material items or money.

What Should You Not Forget for a Backyard Wedding?

There are so many things to keep track of when planning for your wedding, especially when you’re planning for a backyard wedding! Don’t let these details slip through the cracks:

  • Make sure you have plenty of water, beverages, and food for guests if you are not hiring professional bartending, serving, and catering staff – if you are hiring this out, they will likely have a good idea of how much you will need. If you’re not used to an event this size and you’re doing it all yourself, it can be easy to underestimate what you’ll need.
  • Make a plan in case of rain or bad weather and provide protection from the elements
  • Figure out parking. Will guests be able to park on the street or do you need to make other accommodations? Make sure this is allowed with your city and HOA. It’s also a good idea to let your neighbors know in advance.
  • Obtain necessary permits from the city and local authorities for an event, noise, parking, etc.
  • Power. Plan for lots of electrical outlets to be in use during the event if you are having speakers, a DJ, or lighting. You may also need to consider a generator.
